Students who have been dismissed and want to return to Western should take at least two quarters away, enroll in a community college or university and earn above average grades. This will show evidence of your ability to succeed academically, a critical factor in the view of the members of the Scholastic Standing Committee who will review your petition for reinstatement. Consider your time away from Western as an opportunity to reflect on your academic work to date, assess your skills and interests and develop realistic, achievable goals. Greater self-awareness will help you prepare a strong personal statement and increase your chances of academic success when you resume your studies at Western.
Advising for Dismissed Students
It is highly recommended that all dismissed students planning to petition for reinstatement seek advising prior to submitting their petition. Advisors in the Academic Advising Center can explain the reinstatement process, help you consider academic options and provide instruction on how to put together a strong petition. Departmental advisors can explain major declaration requirements and procedures, or if you are a declared major, help you map out a plan to successfully complete your degree.
Dismissed students may enroll in summer courses or in select distance courses (correspondence and online) without petitioning for reinstatement. Contact Extended Education and Summer Programs (EESP) office at 360-650-3308 or visit their website: http://www.extendeded.wwu.edu/ilearn.
