General Browser Information

Browsers

The following browsers listed within this document are supported in some capacity across the Western computer applications. If you have questions or need assistance relating to any of the following information and instructions, contact the Help Desk at x3333.

PREFERRED BROWSERS

RECOMMENDATIONS:OTHER BROWSERS

  • Win XP IE8 users: Need to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. No university-owned computers will no longer be able to connect to Western servers of March 26, 2014. The discontinued XP support is a security risk because hot-fixes, security updates and patches will no longer be issued.
  • Safari: Support for Windows has been discontinued. Safari support in Apple iCloud has been discontinued.

ISSUES WITH SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS

  • Sharepoint: Most functionality is available in most browsers. Some functions only work in IE.

  • Campus Receivables Collector (CRC): Most end-user functionality supported in all browsers, however Administrative Reports do not work in Firefox or Chrome.

  • Nolijweb: IE 9/10/11 require compatibility mode setting.


SETTING WWU AS A TRUSTED SITE

Setting Local Intranet security zone trust settings for all WWU web sites, allows users access to servers that host applications and services within the WWU domain.

BROWSER POP-UPS SETTINGS

Pop-ups are opened several ways such as by clicking on a link and by applications such as Banner and Nolijweb. Perform the following so pop-up windows work with for WWU central applications.

Configure Browsers to allowing pop-ups for WWU sites. Read document

Should a pop-up message similar to the "Allow pop-ups for this site?" when to logging into Banner or Nolijweb, click Allow or OK button.

Note: Browser updates may incur additional pop-up messages that are similar in nature posted within this document. In general, aaccept the pop-up allow requests. If you are unsure about allowing pop-ups access when prompted, contact the ATUS Help Desk at xt 3333.

Java

Run the latest version of Java. Upgrading to Java 1.7 applies to all versions of Windows. The only reported Java 1.7 issue is that the tab key does not work in the Banner login screen with Java 1.7.

Should you encounter any other issues contact the ATUS Help Desk at x3333.

For current users with Java 1.6.45: that need to upgrade to latest version of java.

First time Security Warnings in browsers

Browsers may be issued security warnings the first time when logging into Java web based applications such as Banner and Nolijweb. After answering the security questions properly and enabling the Java plugin, the security warnings should never reappear.
