INTERNSHIP AND FIELD EXPERIENCE INFORMATION
It is mandatory for entry into a physical therapy program that students acquire volunteer or paid experience working directly under the supervision of a physical therapist. You can obtain this experience independently on your own, or, if you are an exercise and sport science major, credit is available for 200-360 hours of volunteer experience (KIN 491, 471, or 472). We have been fortunate to have many local and regional physical therapists participating in the placement of WWU student volunteers.
How many hours do you need?
- For entry into physical therapy or occupational therapy programs, students should attempt to acquire approximately 200-500 hours of work with a therapist in different settings.
- For entry into physician assistant programs, students will need 1000+ hours depending on the type of program they are entering. This should be direct experience with medical professionals.
- For entry into nursing programs, students will need to obtain 100-200 hours of volunteer or paid work involving direct patient care.
Setting up an internship or volunteer experience:
- Put together a resume (1-2 pages)
- Identify clinics or sites for the volunteer experience
- Meet with your faculty advisor to discuss the volunteer experience.
- Set up the volunteer experience with the clinic/facility at least one quarter ahead of time
- Contact the office or site by calling and/or dropping off a resume
- If receiving credit for field experience or internship, complete all forms prior to starting the volunteer work
