During the process of applying for colleges, I was also working on scholarship applications because I knew that the cost of my education would not be an easy one for my parents to bear. When my interest in Western Washington University was sparked, I began to look for possible scholarships offered by the school and discovered the Western Alumni Association Scholarship. I believed I was a good candidate because of my hard work in high school and in the community, so I began work on my application immediately. It wasn’t until later that I discovered I had several relatives who attended Western Washington University, including two great-great aunts who were students when the university was called Bellingham Normal School.
“…I realize I have been passed the torch in a pursuit of an education at Western Washington University.”
Receiving the Western Alumni Association Scholarship has not only made my parents proud and relieved some financial stress, but it has made me hopeful about the future and my educational future at Western. This scholarship has made me all the more confident in my decision to attend Western Washington University because I know that my school and its alumni support me and believe in my potential.
When I’m not studying, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family – especially when I get to create my own recipes and cook and bake for them. I also enjoy hiking and running in my beautiful Snoqualmie Valley, and I love to paint and draw.
I am 6’1” tall, and before my grandfather died, he would always tell me, “Sara, you stand tall and be proud!” - That is how I intend to live the rest of my life.
