“...I am grateful for this display of faith in my ability to succeed."
I am from a small town in central California, fairly isolated from any nearby cities. Moving to Bellingham for school was a big change for me, but I loved Western as soon as I set foot on campus and I have enjoyed every second since. Volunteering at community events at home was always something I loved to do, so when I saw the Alumni Association Leader Scholarship, I was eager to apply. I spent a lot of time on the application and I am glad my hard work paid off.
Because of the scholarships I received last year, I was able to finish my freshman year with zero student debt. With help from this scholarship, I will hopefully be able to do the same this year.
I have been an avid reader since I was very young, and unwinding with a good book is one of my favorite ways to relax. Since I came to Western, I have also taken up Blues Fusion Dancing. It has been a great way to celebrate finishing big projects and essays for class, and I have met many amazing people, too.
When I was very young my father passed away, leaving just my mother and me. We are incredibly close and I talk to her about everything. She has supported and encouraged me in all that I have wanted to do. She is my hero, and I aspire to be as strong and independent as her.
