“Someday I hope to be able to give a donation to a promising student, and I know exactly how that student will feel: Justified, elated, and glad of the recognition.”
I will be a junior in the fall, and have spent the past two years honing my social and academic skills. I study biochemistry, am a member of a chemistry research group, and a resident adviser. I am very involved with the university, and love every moment of it! I hope that my hard work, enthusiasm and encouragement for others is apparent, and I believe that it is based upon receipt of this scholarship! I am honored to represent Western and to have been chosen by the Alumni Association as someone worthy of educational support.
This scholarship makes it possible for me to work only one job during the academic year, giving me the time and energy to focus on research and my studies. I would be in a very tough position financially without this scholarship- it is the difference between working two jobs and working one job. It is a huge relief to me to know that someone is helping to take care of me while I focus on my education!
I have always watched my father with awe. He has been instrumental in instilling the work ethic and dedication I demonstrate. He has Rheumatoid Arthritis and works a physically demanding job, and he has never missed a day of work because of the pain of his autoimmune disorder. My dad has inspired me to continue until the work is done, and has shown me that the only real barriers are the ones you place on yourself.
I love to hike, play soccer, or read when I am not studying! I am currently reading books about virology and immunology, and I do not know what I will look into after I finish my next set. I also like to spend time with my friends and family, especially in the evenings after all of my responsibilities are complete.
