“Upon visiting Western before my senior year of high school, I fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere making Western my top pick.”
As a sophomore here at WWU, I am in my second quarter of the Elementary Education Program. It has been an exciting journey thus far in reaching my dream of becoming an educator. To gain more experience in the field, I volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and worked with Compass 2 Campus. Devoting time to my academics and volunteering within the community is a big part of who I am. This has helped me in taking steps to reach my career goals along with earning this scholarship.
This scholarship has helped to finance my education. I am taking a five year program and fitting it into four years, which means that I have to take summer classes. This scholarship helps to off-set the cost of attending summer classes.
Working with Rebound of Whatcom County has opened my eyes to the emotional challenges that students face in their life. This makes it difficult for students as they have other events going on in their life that can distract from their academic success. I have learned the importance of a consistent, supportive relationship and how this can assist these students in knowing that someone believes in them and that they can be successful. Providing this type of relationship is pivotal for their success. In my everyday life, I work to provide support for friends and not to judge someone based on initial interactions, because you never know what they are going through.
Aside from studying, I enjoy baking, making cards and scrapbooking. I love to bike and kayak on warm days.
