Visit Western

Room Assignments:

You will be living in one of twenty residence halls during your stay at Western Washington University. These are coed residence halls (men and women live in the same building or on the same floor).

There are anywhere from one hundred to five hundred Americans in each residence hall. Your roommate will be another AUAP student or an American. Living with Americans in a residence hall situation is an excellent opportunity to make friends and get to know American culture. Make the best of your situation by talking with your roomate, neighbors or suitemates, eating meals with them and inviting them to do things and go places with you.

Changing Rooms:

It is possible to change rooms ONLY in emergency cases. The best thing to do if your living situation is uncomfortable because of relationships with your roommate or suitemates, is to talk to the people involved and try to come to an understanding. Americans expect to talk about interpersonal problems. If you need help or advice, ask your IPA.

Alcohol:

In Washington State it is against the law for anyone under 21 years of age to drink or purchase or possess alcohol. This law is strictly enforced, and if you are seen with alcohol, the Residence Hall staff or other residents may call the University Police. This is a very serious matter. You should obey the law while you are in the United States. If you are 21 years old or older, you can drink alcohol in your room with the DOOR CLOSED. You CANNOT walk into the hall or any other public place with alcohol in your hand. It is also against the law to buy alcohol for anyone under 21.

Quiet hours:

Quiet hours are from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on week nights and 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. This means you should turn your music down and lower your voices during these hours so no one else in the building can hear you. It is considered very impolite to make noise late at night. You may be written up in an incident report and referred to the Resident Director if you are too loud during quiet hours. During dead week and finals week there will be 24 hours of quiet time. American students are studying for exams so please be considerate.

Damages:

When you arrive, you will be given 1-3 keys to your hall and room. If you lose your keys, you must pay a replacement fee. You will also be responsible for leaving your Residence hall room in the same clean condition as when you arrived. You may decorate your room with posters, rugs, lamps, etc., but you will be charged for any damages found after you leave.
