Since 1979, Western Washington University and Asia University of Tokyo, Japan have jointly sponsored a number of international educational programs, including faculty exchanges, student exchanges, and most recently the Asia University American Program (AUAP).

One of the best opportunities to experience Japanese language and culture is offered through the WWU-Asia University Direct Student Exchange Program. This exchange enables two WWU students to study at Asia University each year (April - February) for the cost of room and in-state tuition at Western.
