Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide an outstanding learning environment that integrates education, scholarship, and service to actively engage students in the biological sciences and to foster their development as lifelong learners.

Vision Statements
 
Undergraduate Education

We aim to provide an excellent undergraduate education in the courses we teach, the diverse research opportunities we offer, the exemplary advising we provide, and the ready access to faculty that students have. 

Graduate Education

We aim to provide a first-class research experience for our students that will provide them with the background and skills to enter a variety of professional careers in biology.  We aim to be a Department that provides a stimulating intellectual environment with rigorous scholarship that facilitates multiple opportunities for graduate students. 

Scholarship

We aim to maintain an active research environment that contributes significantly to the generation of knowledge and that enhances the educational experience of our students.

Service

We aim to have members of the department contribute to the management of the department and university and to act as conduits of skills and knowledge important in both professional and community concerns.

Integration

We aim to integrate education, scholarship, and service such that all are valued contributions to the workings of the department and university.  Complementary individual strengths will be encouraged to provide overall balance within the department.
