Peace Corps Prep Banner

Western has a long and successful tradition of working with the Peace Corps, as evidenced by three straight years of being the #1 mid-sized university for Peace Corps volunteers. Western has again partnered with the Peace Corps to establish the Peace Corps Prep program, which will prepare you for global careers in service, education, business, health, and development. The Prep Program combines the International Studies minor (offered through Western’s Institute for Global Engagement) with community service so that you gain valuable experience in the four core competencies identified by the Peace Corps as critical to intercultural fieldwork:

  • Sector-specific skills
  • Foreign language proficiency
  • Intercultural competence
  • Professional experience and leadership

You can complete the International Studies minor without signing up for the Prep program, but with the Prep Program you build these four competencies while integrating coursework with hands-on experience and professional development. Upon completion of the Prep program, you will receive a certificate from the Peace Corps -- and a competitive edge if you are applying for Peace Corps service or wherever your career takes you. If you are considering the Peace Corps, the Prep program will help you build the type of qualifications that Peace Corps placement officers seek in strong candidates. If you complete a Peace Corps Prep program and apply to a Peace Corps position, you will likely be an attractive candidate! If you only complete the International Studies minor, you will still develop the same set of skills that can be applied to a different career To get started, please read the Student Guide and review the Application and Release Form.
