Wendy Wilhelm
Professor of Marketing

Dr. Wilhelm is a Professor of Marketing in the College of Business and Economics at Western Washington University. She is originally from Ithaca, New York, and received her BA in Psychology and French from Tufts University (Boston) and the University of Geneva (Switzerland), an MBA from Cornell, and a PhD in Marketing and Psychology from the University of Washington. She has worked in brand management at Gillette and Armour-Dial, and in account services with Wells, Rich, Greene, an advertising agency in Manhattan. Wendy has been at WWU since 1986, except for a two year stint teaching at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Her research and teaching interests include sustainable/environmental marketing, integrated marketing communications, marketing research, and virtual worlds such as Second Life. She also supervises the Marketing Internship Program.

Wendy is very passionate about finding internships for her students, and about ensuring that there is a good fit between the intern and the employer. She has spent many years developing a network of intern employers, and many of the ongoing internships were originally developed by WWU marketing alums. Student interns - approximately 60 per year - have an excellent reputation in the business community because of the high quality of the students seeking internships, and the requirement that students complete at least three marketing courses prior to participating in one. Wendy actually encourages students to do their internship during the last quarter of their senior year, after they have completed five or six marketing courses; not only do they have more training in marketing, but they can also continue on in a full-time position if that opportunity arises. Each year, a higher percentage (35% during 2007-08) of marketing interns are hired by intern employers due to their outstanding performance and the care taken up front to ensure this was a firm with which the student was interested in taking a permanent position. The fact that demand for marketing interns exceeds supply by a significant margin signifies the success of Wendy's hard work with the WWU Marketing Internship Program.

Wendy stays in contact with as many graduates as possible (Linked In has been a great help). Alums are mentors for current students, guest speakers for marketing courses and the Student Marketing Association, and internship employers. Further, many of the marketing alums are sincerely interested in helping other WWU marketing students find a job, and they will often send Wendy position announcements to share with students. Overall, this has developed into a very effective networking system, and Western is thankful for and proud of all our marketing students, past and present!!

Wendy lives with her husband, Dave, and their two children, Noah (19) and Tasmin (16) "out in the county" near the mountains and rivers she loves. Wendy enjoys hiking, sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing, and any form of wilderness travel.
