Q:
Everybody knows that
drinking impairs your ability to drive. I was wondering if the same is
true for smoking pot? Is it just as dangerous to drive while under the
influence of marijuana as alcohol?
A:
Marijuana is
considered a sedative drug, so can potentially impair driving and
judgment, especially when combined with other sedating drugs or alcohol.
If someone is stopped for erratic driving, if there is reason for the
officer to believe the driver is impaired, whether it is from alcohol,
other illegal drugs, or sedating prescription drugs, the charge of
"driving under the influence" pertains no matter what the "influence" may
be. Whether or not it is "more" dangerous than alcohol is a matter of
individual variation and quantities used.
