Q:

If someone want to be tested for the HIV virus, how quickly after they have had an experience that concerns them can they be tested for the virus? If they have gotten the virus, will it show up in a test right away, or do they need to wait a period of time before they can take a reliable test?

A:

The Free Confidential HIV Testing that is available on campus recommends waiting 3 months to be tested after a possible exposure for accurate results. This is the waiting period recommended by the Center for Disease Control. The test they use is for HIV antibodies.

There is a test that measures the actual virus or viral load. It can pick up HIV sooner than the antibody test. This test is not done in Bellingham. It is done at the University of Washington. The lab supervisor at UW stated that the viral test could pick up the virus after a month and possibly sooner but could not give me an exact time line. She stated that it varies from person to person.

If you wish to schedule a free HIV test at Western or have further questions please call 650-2961. We can help you assess whether you should come in now or in 3 months.
