Q:

I am currently taking Augmentin 2000mg twice a day, Zoloft, and Ortho-tricyclen. I am taking Augmentin for a sinus infection, and would like to switch to Depo-Provera. I have been having a lot of break-thru bleeding while on the pill. When could I do this safely and still be protected?

A:

First, that is an extraordinarily high dose of Augmentin, and I'd recommend confirming with your provider about the dose--we would never prescribe that much from our clinic.

You can switch to DepoProvera anytime. If you want to get it through the Student Health Center, we need a copy of your most recent pap smear first. Be aware that if you have a tendency to depression, and if there is any worsening because of being on synthetic hormones, the Depo is a 3 month commitment that can't be changed once you make it, so be sure it is the right choice for your other medical issues, not just the contraceptive issues.
