Q:

I recently started taking Desogen, and now I'm into my second pack. I'm supposed to start the third week of pills today, but I'm worried because I've been having what seems like a period for the past thirteen days. The first few days were light, so I thought I might have breakthrough bleeding since I just started the pill, but it's gone on so long and gotten heavier, to where I need both a tampon and a pad, and I started having cramps after about the fifth day, so this seems to really be my period. Should I start a new pill pack at the end? Could this be my period really early, and if so does that mean I'm unprotected in two weeks when I'm supposed to be on the inactive pills? I've always had regular periods 31 days apart before this, and I've never missed a pill. What do I do?

A:

It sounds as if you are having significant breakthrough bleeding on Desogen which may require a change in pill dosage. Do not break the sequence of your pill pack--continue taking the pills in order. Usually by the third cycle of pills, your breakthrough bleeding is much less. However, if you are not certain you can tolerate another cycle of bleeding, you may want to contact your provider about an alternative pill.
