I was wondering if it would be a good idea to start using that birth control patch even if I have never been on any birth control before. Is it reliable, and does it have the same effectiveness as Depo or oral birth control pills?

Most women find the patch works well for them though some do get skin irritation from it. It is as effective as other hormonal forms of birth control. It is best to come in and talk with a sexual health advocate about the options and them with the women's health care practitioner.
