Q:

My doctor prescribed me birth control for irregular periods. I have been taking it for about a year, and am considering stopping, but would like to start again in the future if I become sexually active. The first month I took it, I had horrible side effects, especially nausea. If I stop, when should I expect to stop having regular periods? And if I start again, will the side effects be as drastic?

A:

It sounds as if you did adjust to the side effects and the nausea went away, so in the future when you restart, you may have some side effects, but not usually as severe.

Going off the pills will likely lead to irregular periods again. It can sometimes take up to three months to have a period when you stop, but most women get back into their usual menstrual cycles in a month or two.
