Q:

I was recently put on BC for the first time, after never having normal periods. I was given NuvaRing, which I love. I started the beginning of December, and now nearing my third month. I noticed over Christmas break that I was having some issues controlling my emotions. I didn't think anything of it at the time, cause I knew it was a side effect, and my hormones out of control. But now, I feel like it is getting worse. I just randomly burst into tears for no reason at all. I have never been one to cry, and these sort of emotional outburst have been catching me off guard. I have no reason to be down at all. It gets the worse when I take it out for the week of my period. I started researching online, and it seems like this is a normal thing...is it? If so, what exactly can I do to help it? Will it pass? I really don't want to change methods, but the slight depression is no fun. Any suggestions?

A:

If you'd rather not switch, you could try taking a vitamin B complex supplement. Sometimes the hormones in the pill (or ring) can deplete a person's supply of B-6 (especially) and that can make us more emotionally fragile. Even without the vitamin, it is possible that it will get better.. Your body is probably still getting adjusted to the hormones. Another thing to be sure of is that you didn't somehow get pregnant, as this could cause the emotional changes too, but if you had a normal period, that is unlikely. If it doesn't go away, please come back in, and we'll sort it out together.
