Q:

I am on the nuva ring. This is my first cycle. I took the ring out for a week but didn't bleed. Is that alright? Should I put my next ring in as scheduled?

A:

Good question. If you are sexually active, one always has to consider the possibility of pregnancy if there is no bleeding, but if you used the ring properly, that is unlikely. If you are not pregnant (you could come in here for testing or buy one in the pharmacy), then it is not worrisome.

Our periods are triggered by the drop in hormones (naturally occurring in our bodies once a month when we are not on birth control) or when we are on hormonal birth control, by the drop in those hormones at the end of the month. Nuvaring has such a low dose of hormones that there is not very much of a drop in hormone levels, and for some women there is therefore no bleeding. It does not mean that it is not working.

Come in if you have more questions and we can talk about it.
