Q:

Hello,

I started birth control pills about 2 weeks ago. I had my period the first week, and it seemed a pretty long period and now I have had this brown discharge everyday. I have never had sex and therefore have not had a pap smear...also my BCP is a low dose one...that's what they told me. Is this going to go away or something I should be worried about/go see a doctor?

Thanks.

A:

It depends..

On a few things... If you started your pills while on your period or just before the time it was due, it would not be too surprising if you continued bleeding on the first week of pills, and that the period would last longer, esp if it is a very low dose pill. The brown discharge is probably a little blood that is still coming out (sometimes called "spotting"). If you have never had sex, then there is probably nothing to worry about for now. The brownish discharge should fade off, and your periods should gradually come at more predictable times (sometimes it takes about three months for this).

If you miss pills, you will be more likely to have bleeding at the wrong times. If your bleeding returns, and is very heavy, or if your periods don't become more regular with more time, you should see your health care provider.
