Q:

Can you get AIDS or HIV from oral sex? Male to female ejaculation (orally) specifically?

A:

Yes, it is possible to get HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) from oral sex. It is not considered to be a 'high risk' activity, but transmission is certainly possible. The virus can't pass through the intact mucous membrane of the mouth, but if one has any tears or open areas in their mouth or gums (canker sores or inflamed gums or just tears from brushing too roughly), the virus can pass though these areas into the body. It is recommended not to brush one's teeth before or after oral sex without protection since this will potentially open up the gums and increase the risk of acquiring an infection. The risk of acquiring HIV is one of the reasons that we urge students to use protection for oral sex, both male and female--a condom for the man and a dental dam, saran wrap (non colored and not microwavable), or a modified condom (you can cut off the top of the condom and cut down one side for a barrier) for the woman. This will help to protect you not only from HIV but also from transmission of herpes from the oral area to the genital area. This occurrence is very common.
