Q:

I am a male who received unprotected oral sex from another male. Do you have statistics on the likelihood of getting certain sexually transmitted infections via oral sex?

When should I come in to get tested? It happened 1 week ago. I am not taking classes this summer, but am a full time student during regular terms.

A:

There are no statistics to tell you what your risk of exposure to an STD is with one encounter of receiving fellatio with a partner. If you do not have any information about your partner, his risk factors and history, then being tested is wise.

Our recommendation is that you have baseline testing for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, chlamydia and gonorrhea, and consider preventive antibiotic treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Then we recommend repeat testing in 2 weeks for everything, and again at 6 weeks and 6 months for the virus exposure risk. You could talk with a provider about herpes antibody testing, as that is the highest risk with oral contact.

There is no specific test for human papilloma virus (genital warts) and that is low risk as the receptive partner in fellatio.

If you are not an enrolled student this summer, you are not eligible for services at the Student Health Center, so we recommend you go to Planned Parenthood for screening.
