Q:

I am traveling to Puerto Rico and the US virgin Islands for spring break. Are there any illnesses I should be looking out for? Do I need any shots?

A:

The Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are fairly low risk destinations. There is no malaria in either place but dengue fever is present and transmitted by mosquitoes, so using insect repellent is important if there are any mosquitoes around.

There is some risk of traveler's diarrhea, hepatitis A and typhoid from contaminated food or water. This would be more of a risk for adventurous or long-term travelers. If you are interested in medicine to treat diarrhea if it occurs, or immunizations for hepatitis A and typhoid, you can make an appointment in our travel clinic by calling 650-3400. We also supply further information on safe travel in the tropics.
