Q:

I have been diagnosed with premature menopause due to medical treatment. For the past few years, I have been using the Estraderm patch (Estradiol .05 mg/day) to relieve menopausal symptoms. I very recently began using the Ortho-Evra patch, not only for the primary purpose of birth control, but also to regain "normal" physical features (color, texture, thickness, etc.) of the genitals, and to elevate and strengthen libido. According to my doctor, the Ortho-Evra patch contains more estrogen than what I had previously been receiving. I'm having a hard time finding what the daily dosage of the Ortho-Evra patch is. I have also noticed that my hot flashes are slowly increasing in number and intensity. I'm also worried my libido won't be elevated, or worse, will be lowered.

What is the daily dose given by the Ortho-Evra patch compared to the Estraderm patch? Should the new dosage improve physical features and libido?

Thanks.

A:

The amount of ethinyl estradiol contained within the patch is .75 mg which is absorbed over a week. The Estraderm is .05 mg absorbed daily.

There are individual variations in how women absorb the hormone through the skin so you may want to consider oral estrogen supplementation if you are experiencing hot flashes.

Either medication should improve vaginal symptoms and libido but the higher dosages would be more effective (with potentially greater side effects).
