Q:
My sister has recently been prescribed to take Singulair and
I've heard a lot about it causing depression and even in some situations
leading to suicide. I've also heard that many kids take it as a drug to get
a high from. I'm worried. Any legitimate reason to be?
A:
Your
sister's prescribing health care provider is aware of the reported risks of
Singulair and has to make a decision whether it is a necessary medication to
help manage her asthma. If you are seeing behavior or mood changes in her
since she's taken the drug, you may want to talk with her about your
concerns, or ask that you come with her to a clinic appointment to talk
about the alternatives. If she seems to be doing fine, be reassured that
most patients have no significant side effects from Singulair and do just
fine.
