Q:
Hi,
I am traveling to Peru for 11 days in August.
We will be traveling from the Andes to the Amazon. I was wondering what
immunizations you recommend? Thank you.
A:
It's important that you have a travel medicine consult
before visiting Peru. There are several immunizations that you would need
for travel to that region such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A
vaccines, in addition to making sure that you are up to date on routine
immunizations such as hepatitis B and tetanus.
For an itinerary that includes the Amazon basin, you
will need medicine to prevent malaria. Antibiotics to take with you in
case of severe traveler's diarrhea are also advisable.
At a travel medicine consult, any pre-existing health
issues that you have would be discussed as well as preventive measures to
avoid food and water-borne and insect-related diseases.
We may be close to booked up in our travel clinic at the
WWU student health center for this quarter, but you can try making an
appointment at 650-3400. There are other clinics that cover travel
medicine in Whatcom county and elsewhere. Try Googling "travel clinics"
and "Whatcom" or whatever county would be convenient for you. You should
be seen at least a month before departure, if possible.
Have a great trip to Peru!
