Q:
For the past two weeks I have been unable to sleep at all. It is just like my mind won't shut off. I don't feel depressed or anything, except for at 2am when I am still awake even though I need to be up at 7:30. I've never had any problems sleeping until the last two weeks. What's wrong with me.
A:
Transient insomnia has lots of potential explanations: a stressful time of your life, a change in environment or relationships, too much noise or change in routine, too much stimulating activity or substances (caffeine) before bed, a change in alcohol consumption or other recreational substances, mood changes, including subtle hypomanic episodes, hormonal or metabolic possibilities.
If you feel this is not explainable by anything happening in your life right now, then it is time to come in for an assessment and consideration of whether some kind of treatment--lifestyle change, medication, or relaxation techniques--would be beneficial.
