Q:
I am a sexually active 18 year old female, and currently only have one partner. My boyfriend has recently been fingering more then usual and we have been having sex more frequently. Now I have cloudy urine with a small amount of stinging and a light odor. Is this a UTI and could be because of the increased activity? Also, how worried should I be for an STD?
I have had one UTI earlier this quarter and treated it, does that mean I am more likely to get another one? If it is, how do I prevent one in the future?
A:
It sounds as if you probably do have a UTI, which is important to come in to have checked. Sexual activity does increase your risk of UTI, because of mechanical manipulation of the urethra opening, either from finger or penis, causing vaginal bacteria to be pushed into the opening, and multiplying in the urine in the bladder. Urinating as soon after intercourse or genital manipulation is the best prevention.
Anyone having unprotected intercourse should be checked for STDs as they are most often without symptoms, but can masquerade as UTI symptoms.
