Q:
I'm a freshman here at Western and I think I might have issues focusing. In high school, my inability to focus wasn't a big deal because I always managed to get good grades and learn the material (things were just easier there and I never had to study). Now, I find that I really need to be able to study and focus for long periods of time. I've really worked on my time management (I don't cram) and I don't study in rooms with distractions. Somehow, I sit down in the library and can't get my brain to work on one thing at a time. What can I do? Exercise? Diet? Vitamins?
A:
This is a common concern in college and does not have a "one size fits all" solution. Our recommendation is that you have an intake with the Counseling Center and consider the workshops offered by Academic Advising and the Tutorial Center about time management and studying techniques. Obviously adequate rest, exercise and a good diet with no recreational substances in your system does help too.
