Q:
I am at the end of a cold and every time a blow my nose it is bloody. Why does this happen and how can I stop the nose bleeds?
A:
The nasal mucus membranes become inflamed with the congestion and viral infection, so bleed more easily with the trauma of nose-blowing.
You can use neosporin ointment in your nose to keep the mucosa from drying out and bleeding, or if you are having actual nose bleeds requiring time to stop the streaming, we can see you to evaluate if there is a blood vessel that needs chemical cautery to stop the oozing.
