Q:
I recently found out that two of my roommates friends (who often hang out at our house) have Hepatitis C. I have read that it's 'very contagious' but I am not exactly sure what that means. Even though I know Hep C is usually transmitted via blood or needles I am a still a little frightened. Is there anything I can/should do to protect myself?
A:
It is not casually transmitted but requires body fluid exchange either through sexual contact, sharing personal items potentially contaminated with blood such as razors, or having direct contact with their blood in such a way that it can infect through your mucus membranes, or a break in your skin. So, being in the same room with them, sharing a meal with them doesn't put you at risk.
