Q:
I was wondering about Anal Douching. Is it safe? Is it necessary for anal sex health? If I am engaging in anal sex, how can I decrease the risks? How much anal leakage happens from anal sex?
A:
It isn't recommended as it causes additional trauma to the anal sphincter, the mucus membranes of the rectum and can actually increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Anal intercourse has risks associated with abrasions, even microscopic, to the mucus lining, laxity (stretching) of the anal sphincter resulting in incontinance of stool, and all sexually transmitted infections, in addition to some intestinal infections can easily be contracted. There is no way to reduce risks completely, but using latex condoms, and plenty of lubricant can help.
I'm not sure if you are referring to anal leakage of fecal matter or semen, but there certainly is leakage because the anal sphincter is stretched and does not contract as well for a period of time after anal intercourse.
