Q:
I haven't taken my birth control in six days - I did not get my period. This could be for several reasons: I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend, but I took the morning after pill. Unfortunately, I did not take the second pill in the cycle within the 12 hours, I took it at the 17 hour. I took two pregnancy tests and they both came up negative. I took birth control before I had sex the second time, but now I'm concerned. Do I need to get the morning after pill, and how will I know if I'm pregnant?
A:
The timing of contraception taken and not taken and when intercourse took place is confusing in the information you have provided. It is important you come in with a calendar and go over your cycle, and the timing of unprotected intercourse with our nurse so she can determine if you are within the 72 hours when morning after therapy can be effective, and we can also do a highly sensitive pregnancy test. Don't have unprotected intercourse until you are safely back on regular contraceptives for at least one full cycle. (use spermicide and condoms if you have intercourse)
