Q:
If someone is really irregular with their birth control pill (say they forget to take the pill on average twice a month and vary between taking it in the morning or at night everyday), are they more likely to have any negative long term effects when it comes to anything sexual or involving reproduction?
A:
Taking synthetic hormonal contraception on an irregular basis has two primary risks: pregnancy and unpredictable bleeding. There is no evidence to suggest that there are negative long term effects, but the short term effects are significant enough. If you are having problems with remembering to take a daily pill, discuss the other options with your provider such as the patch or nuvaring.
