Q:
I have recently had a lot of discomfort regarding my digestive system. I frequently feel nauseous after eating and it is sometimes partially relieved after burping, passing gas, or pooping. I also have noticed blood in my poop lately and it is often painful to poop as well. I'm nor sure what the problem is or if it's something serious. Do I need to see a doctor?
A:
This is probably two different things happening--the nausea could be from stomach lining irritation (too much acid), food intolerance (like milk products), gall bladder problem, or if you are female, possibly pregnancy. The bright red blood and painful bowel movements could be from hemorrhoids or anal fissures (cracks) or from inflammation in the bowel.
You can try antacids like over the counter ranitidine, try increasing fiber in your diet to soften the stools, but this sounds like it is pretty uncomfortable so coming in to be evaluated is a good idea.
