Q:
I just switched birth control and I have not gotten my period at the same time as I always used to...its like 3 days late from my normal time and I have gone through all of my sugar pills and still no period...is this normal when you switch birth control types? Also when should I take my next pack...after I get my period whenever it comes or when my sugar pills are done even though I haven't gotten my period? I should note that I kinda freaked out and thought I could be pregnant so went and got a pregnancy test and I am not pregnant...so whats going on?
A:
It isn't unusual to skip a period on the low dose birth control pills as you have very little build up of endometrial lining in the uterus and that can happen with a switch in pills. If you go three cycles without a period, and pregnancy tests are negative, you can discuss this with your health care provider. Some women appreciate no periods, others find it disconcerting. From a long term health standpoint, it appears to not be a problem but there is not decades of data to review yet on this question.
