Q:
I haven't had my period in over two months... but I know I'm not pregnant and I'm not on any kind of birth control. Any idea what could cause this?
A:
Menstrual cycles are not always like clockwork due to a number of potential factors: stress, hormone imbalance, metabolic disruption (like a bad virus), travel (like airplane trips). So unless you go more than 4 cycles without a period with no explanation, we don't feel this is out of the ordinary. If you do go 4 months without a period, then coming in for a basic check makes sense--we check your labs, an exam and then try to induce a period with 5 days of hormone medication, just to make sure all works fine.
