Q:
I have recently had unprotected sex multiple times within the past few weeks. I've read that some STI's don't show up on tests for weeks to months after exposure. Currently I am not having symptoms but want to get tested. Should I wait for that couple month period to set up an appointment or make an appointment now?
A:
We recommend baseline testing after potential exposure so you have confirmed negative testing, and then rechecks on the following schedule: 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months. Not every test needs to be repeated every time, but it is important that HIV and Hepatitis testing be tested outside the "window" period where the antibody level is not high enough to be detected if you have been exposed.
You can call 650-3400 to schedule STI testing, and since you are looking at more than just chlamydia/gonorrhea testing, it would be best to have an appointment with a provider to determine what you should be tested for.
