Q:
I am 25 years old. I have had regular periods since I have been about 16 years old. By regular, I mean I have never been more than two weeks late, and my cycle has mostly been very consistent.
I was on Brevicon Birth Control pills until 2 1/2 weeks ago, and was using condoms as a back up method. I am now going to use Condoms, Diaphragm, and Spermicide, but I have not yet had intercourse since stopping the pill.
I have not had my period for 2 months. The month that I had my period last, I had two that month. One a week and 1/2 or so early, and then another one two or three days later (when I would normally have one. This was VERY unusual, especially because I was on the pill. I have taken a pregnancy test over the counter, and it came back negative.
Should I be concerned?
A:
It can happen, especially with the hormonal change of stopping birth control pills, that you fail to have sufficient endometrial lining to have a period. It can take two to three months to get back to your own hormonal cycles, so it is not unusual to not bleed for that time. The erratic bleeding in the previous cycle probably caused your lining to thin out considerably.
If you do one more pregnancy test in a week and it is still negative, then wait at least another month to see if you have your own period. If you go 4 months with no bleeding, it is time to be checked out.
