Q:
I have been taking a low dose of birth control for a while, and my last period came a few days early and was lighter than normal (it has always been regular). Do I need to consider increasing the dose of the pill, and should I be concerned about it's effectiveness?
A:
It is not unusual for low dose pills to cause light and/or periods that are not routine. It does not decrease their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy but it can be disconcerting. If you've recently been on antibiotics or missed pills, then there is a small possibility of being pregnant so you should have a pregnancy test done. Otherwise there is no need to increasing the pill dose unless you cease to have periods at all for longer than 4 cycles, or you start to bleed quite erratically.
