Q:
I had anal sex one time a year ago with my boyfriend. I don't know if it started because of that, but around that time ish, I started to bleed a tiny tiny bit every time I went #2. It still bleeds every once in a while and I haven't really thought anything of it, but the other day I went again and it bled pretty bad. It feels like I have a scratch or something, but I've tried looking and haven't seen anything... Do you know what this might be?
A:
It is most likely an anal fissure--an unhealing crack at the anal opening that reopens every time you have a bowel movement. To confirm that, it would be wise to have an examination done, which we can do in clinic, and there are some topical medications you can apply that can help heal it. In the mean time, avoiding hard and dry stools by drinking plenty of fluids and adding in extra fiber in your diet, such as fresh fruit and vegetables and psyllium powder (like metamucil) will help.
