Q:
I have passed three kidney stones this week and though the pain isn't as bad as when I passed them, it is still very much there. Today it didn't start hurting until I went on a run. I'm just wondering if/when this will go away and whether or not it's safe for me to exercise. Thank you for your help.
A:
It sounds as if this has happened to you before and you know how to determine if you've actually passed the stones (have you ever had a stone analyzed so you know what kind of crystals you are spilling in your urine and what might help, diet or medication, to prevent them?) If you had three, there are likely more in your kidneys so the question is whether you still have a partially obstructing stone causing your persisting discomfort.
It is not a problem to exercise as long as you are not having acute obstructive symptoms (severe pain, vomiting, blood in urine) and you are staying well hydrated, not getting dehydrated. It is wise to be evaluated for your recurrent stones and to consider imaging to see if there are more yet to pass, or some too big to pass.
