Q:
I woke up five mornings ago (Friday) and my neck was very itchy. Not just in one spot but virtually the whole thing - along my larynx, on the back of my neck, and where my neck meets my collarbone. It's not red or dry and appears normal, but the itching hasn't stopped. It hasn't gotten worse, but it's not any better either. I haven't changed soaps or worn a new necklace or anything else I can think of. Is this worth getting checked out, or should I just wait for it to go away?
A:
Such a limited area of itching would suggest some kind of contact sensitivity but since it is persisting, you can try some topical hydrocortisone cream 1% over the counter several times a day. If that is not settling it, or if your itching involves more areas, we should see you to make sure it is not some kind of systemic (entire body) issue causing itch without rash.
