Q:
I have missed my period by four days and had sex with my boyfriend two weeks ago. We used a condom, but it failed. I took a pregnancy test after one day of the missed period and it came back negative. I have no other symptoms of pregnancy, but I'm still worried that I may be pregnant because my periods are usually very regular. Maybe I should have a blood test taken. How accurate are blood tests at the SHC? Are they quantitative or qualitative?
A:
A urine pregnancy test should be accurate at 10 days after conception so you may need to retest. A blood pregnancy test that is qualitative (either it is a positive or negative) is sufficient. Quantitatives are only done in certain clinical situations. If you want to come on Monday we can rerun the urine pregnancy test and if you decide that you want the confirmation of a blood test, we can do that (we send it out to the hospital lab with results coming back later in the day).
