Q:
I had a yeast infection earlier in the month and treated it with Monistat. A few weeks later though I got another one and treated it. I figured that my boyfriend and I were probably passing it back and forth since we don't usually use condoms. We waited a week without having sex and just started again with condoms. Is this ok? Or should we wait longer? Or is there another problem?
A:
If it is just yeast that has caused your symptoms, you have done well to treat and to abstain and then proceed to use condoms (with water based lube as needed). This is more than adequate treatment for yeast. Your partner is unlikely to have persistent yeast, though that is possible, moreso in men who are not circumcised.
If you are without symptoms, this is good. If you have any recurrent symptoms of concern, that would warrant a follow up visit with your provider, if not an exam to ensure that there is not another process (bacterial overgrowth for example) going on.
