Q:
I think I need a female exam but I don't know.
I have been having pains in my abdomen and serious cramping at random times not during my period. I am wondering if I can come in for an exam but not get a pap smear (I can't afford one right now). And what exactly would happen at the exam? I have been reading some stuff on the internet about exams and they sound painful and scary. I am a virgin and am VERY sensitive to touching. I am extremely ticklish and I get VERY nervous being at the doctors.
A:
It is important that your abdominal symptoms be evaluated with a careful history and abdominal examination at the very least, and certainly a urinalysis. Your nervousness about a pelvic exam (vaginal exam) is shared by many women. Depending on where your symptoms are, a pelvic exam may or may not be necessary. A pap smear would not be necessary. Our women's nurse practitioners are very sensitive and gentle about an initial exam and it should neither be painful or scary. You can call 650-3400 to set up a same day appointment.
