I am currently on birth control (Aviane) and I often experience heavy spotting in between periods. Is the birth control still working and am I still protected from getting pregnant?

 

A:

You are experiencing break through bleeding which means the low dose hormonal levels are not keeping your endometrial lining stable enough to avoid the spotting.  You are still protected from pregnancy but if the spotting goes on longer than three cycles, you may want to consider talking to your women's health care provider about a different dosage of birth control pill.
