Q:
I have always had trouble waking up in the morning but lately it seems to be getting worse. I am constantly fatigued and frequently sleep through my multiple alarms, plus when I do wake up, I feel groggy for several hours. I also frequently feel tired and week throughout the day. I have had low iron levels in my blood in the past and my mother also has hypothyroidism, which I know is genetic but I have never been tested for it. Is it possible to get blood tests done at the health center?
A:
Yes, you can have those things checked at the Health Center, plus a fuller evaluation of what might be causing your fatigue. Although most students with excessive fatigue are dealing with inadequate rest, too much caffeine, alcohol or other substances, or stress and depression, it is not uncommon to find anemia, blood sugar problems and thyroid problems as a possible explanation.
