Q:
Last month my period was very light. This month I missed my period and have cramping, but I didn't have sex since my last period. I've recently come off of birth control and gained a lot of weight. Could this be the reason for my missed period?
A:
There could be several reasons for a missed period.
Pregnancy is still a possibility as you don't say how long you've been off of your birth control and up to 30% of women have one or more periods in the first three months of pregnancy. So you do need to have a pregnancy test.
Hormonal change could be an explanation due to coming off birth control and not having your own ovulation cycles kicking back in yet.Thyroid dysfunction could be an explanation due to your weight gain.
Stress could be a factor.Infection of the pelvic organs can cause cramping and a change in period, so having tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea is advisable.
